the story of seven ranges

The Seven Ranges, the initial land tract surveyed under the Public Land Survey System in eastern Ohio, covered 42 miles on the northern edge and 91 miles on the western edge along the Ohio River. It included Monroe, Harrison, Belmont, Jefferson, and parts of other counties.

Originally acquired by Great Britain from France in 1763, the region opened for settlement after the 1783 Treaty of Paris. Despite initial restrictions, squatters settled in areas like Tiltonsville and Martins Ferry, later removed by the federal government. The Land Ordinance of 1785 formalized surveying and land sale, with townships and sections systematically numbered.

The Geographer’s Line, starting at the Ohio River’s north bank, extended westward through the territory. Thomas Hutchins, the Geographer of the United States, oversaw the survey, and after each completion of seven ranges, land was allotted to compensate veterans. The remaining lots were auctioned in New York.

This historical context parallels the founding of 7 Ranges Entertainment, marking a significant era in US history and entertainment.
